Main idea and its purpose
The focal object method (FOM) was proposed by the American K. Whiting. It is based on the analysis of random objects and their random features. The word "focus" in the method name means that the object is in focus, considered and analyzed.
The meaning of this method is to transfer the features of several randomly selected objects to a specific object. The result is unusual combinations that allow overcoming psychological inertia as well as creative barriers.
The focal object method is a method of searching for new ideas and object properties based on the addition of other randomly selected object properties to the original object.
Hence the second name random object method. Technology starting points - associative search and heuristic properties of randomness. It is used in the search for new modifications of known devices and methods, especially in consumer goods, in the creation of product advertisements, as well as in training the imagination.
Application guidance: scope of application, for example, when working with a group of a certain age and composition; in individual work, etc.
The focal object method is used for the purposes of children's development at preschool age (3-7 years) imagination, speech, fantasy. Various games have been created for this: from simple ones where you have to try to combine the properties of different objects and draw what happened, to more challenging games such as Inventors, Fantastic Animals.
The theoretical basis of FOM is a 6-step algorithm, performed sequentially:
1. We choose the focus object - which we want to improve.
2. We choose random objects (3-5 concepts, from the encyclopedia, books, newspapers, obligatory nouns, various objects that differ from the original object).
3. Definition and recording in the table 6-10 features of random objects.
4. Generation (development) of new technical solutions by combining the properties of random objects with the original object.
5. We develop the obtained opportunities through associations.
Evaluating the solutions found and selecting the best one that meets the conditions of the problem.
For example, generating ideas:
- A flower; Beautiful, slim; A beautiful woman; The slime shined; As a model; Gymnast in the hall; Fashion Show; Competitions in sports; Untamed fashion show.
The results of applying the method, for example, increasing the ability to go beyond standard solutions, etc.
The method was proposed as a means of overcoming the inertia of thinking, activating the ability to create new ideas and find innovative solutions. Transferring properties of other objects that are not related to the original object in any way to the object under study often provides convincing answers, because it allows you to look at the conditions from a different, unambiguous angle. The technique of use is simple and constant. Another advantage of FOM is the promotion of associative thinking.
There is no guarantee that you will get a proper solution using the method. The method also has weaknesses - inadequacy in working with complex technical problems and lack of clarity in the selection of evaluation criteria for received ideas.
