Main idea and its purpose
To come up with something new and creative, we need to think illogically first and use associations between things that might seem to have nothing in common. This is how we will end up with an association that triggers the disruptive solution we were after. You can do these in person with post-it notes or you can also create a virtual challenge.
Scope of application, for example, when working with a group of a certain age and composition; in individual work, etc.
The random word technique is a perfect method to be used in a group and inspire creative, disruptive ideas to make processes more efficient or identify breakthrough opportunities.
Application guidance: scope of application, for example, when working with a group of a certain age and composition; in individual work, etc.
1. Start with a well-defined problem statement. Creativity needs boundaries, so make sure that you are focusing on a specific problem.
2. Pick a word at random, or, if you’re struggling to find one that is sufficiently unexpected, print out the list of words provided by cognitive psychologist Edward de Bono and pull one out of a hat.
3. Come up with as many ideas as possible that associate that word with the problem statement. Focus
on the task, but keep it brief—no longer than three minutes.
4. Discuss the ideas among your team and capture the good ones. Build on the ones that have potential.
5. Choose another word, and repeat. After a few rounds, prioritize the most important associations and develop the ideas further outside of the meeting.
The results of applying the method, for example, increasing the ability to go beyond standard solutions, etc.
This method can be used by everyone: groups, individuals, organizations, employees, customers, partners. They use their creativity to imagine ideas, products, services and processes. Breakthroughs are created through collective creativity by various unlikely associations and connections that do not seem to be logical at first sight but prove to be brilliant after prototyping and validation.
